The Apron Feeder operates via a robust chain-and-slat conveyor system, driven by a high-torque motor and gearbox assembly. Its core mechanism involves a series of overlapping steel slats connected by heavy-duty chains, which traverse linearly along a tracked frame. This design enables continuous, controlled feeding of bulk materials—including large, abrasive, or high-temperature aggregates—at adjustable speeds. Key features include self-lubricating chain guides for reduced friction, wear-resistant slat coatings to extend service life, and a sealed enclosure to minimize dust pollution. The feeder’s linear motion ensures uniform material flow without spillage, while its modular construction allows easy maintenance and customization for mining, cement, and bulk material handling applications.

An apron feeder is a heavy-duty material handling device that uses overlapping steel pans (aprons) mounted on two parallel chains to convey bulk materials from a hopper or bin to a crusher or processing unit at a controlled rate. Its main advantages are: exceptional durability for handling large, sharp, and highly abrasive materials; the ability to handle very heavy surges from direct dumping by excavators or trucks; accurate feed rate control; and reliable operation in harsh outdoor mining environments.

Apron feeders are the preferred choice when:1.Material lump size exceeds 1,000–1,500mm (such as run-of-mine ore directly from blasting).2.Material is very sharp, angular, or highly abrasive (e.g., hard granite, magnetite, or basalt).3.Feed must withstand direct truck or front-loader dumping impact.4.Precise, low-speed, controlled feeding is required for downstream gyratory or jaw crushers in large primary crushing stations.5.Wet, sticky, or clayey materials that would cause vibrating feeder troughs to clog.

The feed rate is controlled by adjusting the chain travel speed via a variable speed drive (VSD) on the drive motor. The feed rate (t/h) is a product of the pan width, material layer depth (controlled by the skirt board height), and chain speed. For precise metering, the apron feeder can be integrated with a weightometer and PLC system to maintain a target tonnage automatically.

Apron pans are fabricated from heavy-gauge manganese steel or wear-resistant alloy plate. Under typical primary crushing conditions (hard rock, large lump size), pan service life ranges from 3 to 8 years depending on abrasiveness and operational intensity. Drive chains are the most maintenance-intensive component and should be inspected for elongation every 500 hours; replacement is typically required every 2–5 years. Apron feeders are large, heavy machines — typical installations require a reinforced concrete pit or elevated steel structure to accommodate the inclined or horizontal pan conveyor beneath the feed hopper. The structure must be designed to handle both the static weight of the feeder plus material load and the dynamic impact forces from material dumping.
